Two Injured After Myanmar Navy Fires on Civilian Boat in Kyaukphyu

A Myanmar Navy speedboat opened fire on a civilian motorboat transport in Kyaukphyu Township on June 7, leaving two local residents wounded, according to local sources.

The victims were identified as Maung Baek Pe, 15, and U Maung Han, 52. Both are residents of Sittara Village in Ann Township, located in the central region of Rakhine State.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:00 a.m. near the Thanzi River.

The motorboat, carrying three passengers and a cargo of domestic pigs, was returning from Min Kyung Bridge in Ramree Township.

Local sources stated that speed boat from Navy vessel stationed near Aung Lan Cheung Village targeted the civilian boat from behind, firing a machine gun.

"The motorboat was heading back after loading the pigs when the Navy speedboat tracked them and opened fire from behind," a local resident reported.

U Maung Han sustained gunshot wounds to both legs. Maung Baek Pe suffered critical injuries after being struck by a bullet under his right arm near the collarbone. The third passenger on board, U Maung San Nwe, escaped the attack uninjured.

The two wounded individuals are currently receiving medical treatment.

The attack comes amid escalating tensions and recent military setbacks for junta forces on the Kyaukphyu front.

Local residents report a rise in retaliatory actions against civilian populations in Rakhine State, including airstrikes, drone attacks, and village burnings.

Prior to this incident, on June 5, a drone strike hit Ward No. 2 of Lay Taung Town four times, killing 19-year-old oil industry worker Maung Kyi Aye.

Additionally, on the night of June 6, military aircraft deployed heavy bombing across three villages in Kyaukphyu Township, injuring three civilians, including a 12-year-old girl, Ma Su Nay Lin.
