Kachin displaced by conflict wants the Tatmadaw to stop attacking them in northern Burma after a shell landed in their internally displaced persons (IDP) camp.
The artillery shell struck Magar Yang camp, home to over 1,600 people in Kachin State, along the China border.
“After the shell landed in our camp, I immediately cradled my baby,” said a resident, explaining many who were ready to flee stayed after no more shells landed. “I planned to hid in a bunker, but I didn't leave. With extreme trepidation, we stayed in our home.”
KNG has learned, however, some IDPs did spend the night sleeping in bunkers.
Another resident told KNG that the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) would never attack their camp as the Tatmadaw did. Fortunately, no one was injured when the shell struck the ground next to a home.
The incident happened on the same night KIA attacked a checkpoint on the Irrawaddy Bridge (aka Bala Min Htin) in Myitkyina, capital of Kachin State. Tatmadaw also shelled KIA positions in Laiza, Mai Ja Yang and Laisin.
