According to a list compiled by the State Department of Disaster Management on May 30, houses, lamp posts, education staff housing, and school signboards have been damaged in the two townships and the damage cost is over five million kyats.

“Trees fell on the street and roofs of the houses due to the strong wind. No houses have collapsed entirely. [The residents] can live in it again. In most cases, only the roofs have blown off so relief camps have not been opened,” said Daw Ni Ni Aung, head of the State Department of Disaster Management.  

The department has provided construction materials and cash assistance to repair damaged homes in Hpa-an and Hlaingbwe townships, she continued.

Officials from the department said no casualties or animal deaths have been reported and other townships have also been damaged by the strong wind but the department has not received the list of damaged assets yet.

“One side of the house’s front has been damaged. It will cost over Ks 250,000 to repair it based on the village situation. Plantations have been affected the most in the village. We haven’t seen the government coming to visit us. We haven’t requested assistance from the government,” said Marn Myint Aung from Tha Mein Dut Village in Kawkareik Township, whose house has been damaged by strong wind.

Houses have been damaged not less than four times after strong wind hit the Karen State within April and May, according to officials from the State Department of Disaster Management.
