Police Fail to Arrest Muse Bank Gunmen

Police have been unable to arrest the two men who shot at the Myawaddy Bank branch in Pyidaungsu Road in Muse Town’s downtown area, in Northern Shan State at around 3.30am on 24 April said a police officer.

myawaddy bankSai Kyaw, a local resident from Muse Town said: “The two men who shot at the main bank building were wearing black and holding guns. Though there were no casualties over 40 bullets hit the building.

“No one yet knows who did it. We need to think about why they only shot at a building and not people. We have to assume that it is some sort of warning.”

Letters on Brigade 4 Kachin Independence Army (KIA) headed notepaper had been sent to the Myawaddy Bank, Myanmar Economic Bank, Innwa Bank and United Amayapura Bank branches in Muse Town during March, but the banks had ignored the letters.

In their search for the perpetrators the authorities have been checking people at the Asia World Burma/China border checkpoint in Muse. They have also been checking the Shweli River ports of Tawyoak and Hosao.

Muse is a town on the Burma/China border where crimes such as shootings at gold shops and armed robbery are frequent occurrences.
