Shan State Parliament Approves 2020-21 Budget

SENG PHOO — The budget for the 2020-21 financial year for Shan State should be fairly allocated based on what’s needed in the different regions of the state, said a parliamentarian for Hsipaw township.

Nang San San Aye, who is also the secretary of the Shan State Parliament’s Local Projects and Finance Scrutinizing Committee, told SHAN that budget allocations won’t always be the same for different regions based on its population density or what projects are planned but they should be fair.

The Shan State Parliament met from March 18-19 to discuss the budget for 2020-21. On May 19, it approved an expenditure budget of about 340 billion kyat (est. US$243 million).

Nang San San Aye said the state-level parliament will report it to the Union Parliament and wait for its approval. “The union-level parliament will scrutinize our budget. I don’t know how much they will cut from the state budget.”

Under the NLD government, the Shan State Parliament held 23 parliamentary sessions, including 18 regular meetings, 3 emergency sessions and 2 special meetings.
