There is almost no school enrollment in basic education schools in Hakha and Htantalan Townships in Chin State, according to locals.

Only a very few students have enrolled their names, although the school enrollment kicks off across the country on May 24th.

The military council is planning to reopen basic education schools from June 1st. The school enrollment day for basic education students began on May 24th across the country.

However, one parent of a student from Htantalan Township said: “No one came to the school for enrollment on May 24th. The schools were locked.”

Another parent said: “I don’t think it would be ok even if there is school enrollment. The reason is many teachers have joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) in Chin State.

There are two basic education high schools, two post-primary schools and one basic education primary school in Htantalan Township. Likewise Hakha Township which is the capital city of Chin State faces a similar situation.

A parent of the student said: “Our country has lagged behind our neighboring countries. We feel depressed due to the military coup coming at a time when the country is trying to keep abreast of them. In the time of military rule, the education standard was very low. Now the past has come back. Last year the children were unable to attend the schools due to the Covid-19. On the one hand, I think about the education of children. On the other hand, we don’t accept the military coup.”

The parent of a student said: “ Even in the reigns of the U Thein Sein Administration and the NLD-led government, Chin State never had a sufficient number of students. I don’t think the schools can really function when the schools reopen.”

There are four BEHS and four middle schools in downtown Hakha.
