Over 600 people protested in Maungdaw, a westernmost town in the Rakhine (Arakan) State, on February 4 to demand the release of Dr Aye Maung and find out the truth on Mrauk-U incident.
The protesters gathered at Myoma School in Maungdaw and marched to the clock tower while shouting slogans to release Dr Aye Maung and writer Wai Hin Aung, find out the truth on Mrauk-U incident, and immediate release youths who have been detained in Mrauk-U incident, according to the protest leader U Sein Hla Phyu.
“The aim of the protest is to demand [the authorities] to find out the truth for Mrauk-U incident [which broke out on] January 16, 2018. We also demand the immediate release of Dr Aye Maung and writer Wai Hin and stop the arrest of Mrauk-U youths,” said U Sein Hla Phyu.
He added that the protesters have also called for an independent investigation team with experts from outside to investigate Mrauk-U incident.
Maungdaw protesters marched on the roads to the clock tower, encircled the clock tower, and ended the protest at 2:30 pm after returning to Myoma School.
