The number of IDPs displaced by the fighting between the Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA) and the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) in the post-election period has exceeded 3,700.

Abbot Nyarnawara from Namsalin monastery said: “The previous days, monks and Namkhone philanthropic organizations heard the voices of gunfire when they donated rice for the IDPs. The IDPs are in need of blankets and carpets as it is a winter season.”

The fighting between the RCSS/SSA and the TNLA resumed on December 25th 2020 with the conflict forcing locals to flee their homes. There are 1,846 IDPs in Tawsan village-tract in Kyaukme Township, 1007 in Kyaukme Township and 869 in Nanmatu Township in northern Shan State.

Newly elected MP Sai Aung Myint who won the lower house parliamentary seat in the recent election said: “According to the list collected in the recent two days, the number of IDPs in Kyaukme Township reached 1,007. The affected villages are located on the road heading to Lwalant, Kaungkhar and Namhsam.  Likewise, 249 people are taking shelter in Mansan village in Nanmatu Township and over 620 at Narhsaing School.

The IDPs are unable to go home due to military tension, although the fighting between the two armed organizations, which last nearly two weeks has stopped now.
