Outbreaks of Dengue Fever Reported in NMSP-Controlled Areas

According to the Mon National Health Committee (MNHC), dengue fever outbreaks have been occurring in New Mon State Party (NMSP)–controlled areas, specifically in the Ye Chaung Phayar region and the Ye Phyu and Kya-in Seikgyi townships.

The Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) team under MNHC reports that from January to March 2025—a three-month period—222 dengue cases were recorded in Ye Chaung Phayar, making it the area with the highest incidence of dengue fever.

An M&E official commented, “Dengue outbreaks happen every year. There’s no chance it simply disappears. Looking ahead another five to ten years, it’s unlikely to go away—because we haven’t been able to carry out any root-cause eradication program. The core issue is the larvae. Without disrupting the larvae, the dengue mosquito’s life cycle continues.”

It was also reported that dengue cases have continued to rise in June. MNHC, in coordination with local community groups, continues efforts to prevent and treat the disease and to deliver public health education.

Residents in towns and nearby areas under NMSP control also face concurrent dengue fever and malaria outbreaks. MNHC healthcare workers are feeling under pressure.

The official added, “From May through June, there have been malaria patients—some were severe enough to require hospital admission. In May alone, 11 malaria cases were treated in Wae Zinn. What’s worse is that some of those patients also had dengue fever.”

Although outbreaks are climbing in these regions, the response is hampered by insufficient medical supplies and reduced support from NGOs and INGOs, making disease control a struggle.

MNHC operates three hospitals and 17 clinics in NMSP-controlled areas and is implementing prevention and treatment programs against dengue and malaria.
