Numbers of war refugees increased following escalating hostilities

Since the Tatmadaw and the AA are fighting in Ponnagyun Township, the number of displaced people has increased recently, according to relief workers.

Clashes have broken out near Sinthe and Awrama villages in Ponnagyun Township as of 25 June, local residents have been forced to flee their homes and have to take shelter in IDP camps at Pauk Taw Pyin and Poe Shwee Pyin villages.

Over 300 people including children arrived at Pauk Taw Pyin camp and about 2000 people arrived at Poe Shwee Pyin village, camp managers said.

“They need health care services, food and mosquito nets. In the rainy season mosquitoes are a health hazard for people in Arakan State, so mosquito netting is essential for them,” said Ashin Thabawa Nadi, manager of the Pauk Taw Pyin IDP camp.

Currently, the ongoing armed conflicts between the Tatmadaw and the AA are mounting in Kyauktaw and Ponnagyun Townships.

Nearly 50,000 people have been taking shelter in IDP camps in Mrauk-U, Minbya, Ponnagyun, Pauktaw, Rathedaung, Buthidaung, Kyauktaw and Maungdaw Townships when conflicts erupted back in early December 2018.
