Vehicles have been instructed not to travel around Kachin State’s notorious jade town in the evenings due to ongoing military conflict between the Kachin Independence Army and the Tatmadaw.

The travel restrictions in Hpakant town are now in effect from 7pm to 6am daily, according to a notice from the KIA’s Battalion 6. The KIA June 7 warning extends over Mogaung-Kamaing Road, La Wa-Kamaing Road, and Hway Khar-Hpakant Road.

Lieutenant Colonel Naw Bu, the KIA’s information officer, said that the travel restrictions are in force to protect the public’s safety.

“Fighting broke out in Tanai area after the Tatmadaw launched an offensive. We have set down the restrictions for public safety due to the military situation,” he said.

Tanai township is approximately 45 miles from Hpakant.

The KIA warned that it will not take responsibility for any issues that may arise if buses or other vehicles continue to attempt to use the roads past the restricted hours. The notice said that bus and vehicle drivers will be held responsible should they fail to follow the travel curfew.

Lt-Col Naw Bu said that while there were no clashes on June 7, tensions remain high and fighting could erupt.

“The Tatmadaw has not withdrawn its offensives so far. There have been reports of [them] increasing their military power. Fighting may intensify based on this situation,” he added.

Fighting between the Tatmadaw and the KIA erupted around Tanai township on June 3. Hundreds of civilians have reportedly been trapped as their attempt to flee to Tanai town was blocked by authorities.
