Muslim IDPs from Maungdaw allowed to return

Reports indicate that Muslim residents who escaped the conflict in Maungdaw between AA and Junta forces have been allowed to go back to their homes in Maungdaw.

A local Muslim IDP stated, "On April 7, the AA permitted Muslim inhabitants to access Ward (1) and Ward (4). On the 8th, the inhabitants were permitted to access Ward (2). It is currently lively with individuals heading back to their homes in Maungdaw. They are able to move without restrictions."

A Muslim elder permitted to come back home from the Hla Po Khaung Temporary Refugee Camp informed Narinjara that if any break-ins occurred during the conflict, they were instructed to submit a complaint to the Arakan People's Revolutionary Government with a list of stolen items.

He stated, "Those whose homes have been burglarized have been instructed by the authorities to create a list of stolen goods and submit a report to the AA."

The majority of Muslim IDPs in Maungdaw town have been temporarily housed in Hla Phoe Khaung, a village that has over 300 displaced individuals, and the AA has permitted their return in groups beginning April 1, 2025.

"We have provided lists for each family, and the local Muslim village leaders, along with AA military commanders, have collaborated to organize transportation. The AA representatives currently have a positive relationship with us and are assisting us with all our requirements," he stated.

Amidst the conflict in Maungdaw town, the AA detained over 100 residents implicated in theft and burglary as the locals were escaping the war, and they have received prison sentences, as per local sources.

On 8 December 2024, the AA seized Maungdaw, a western border town adjacent to Bangladesh, after the Border Police headquarters (Nakaka-5), the junta's final stronghold, was captured by the AA.
