After more than a year accepting complaints from Mon State residents, the most common issues brought before the Hluttaw (parliament) are land disputes, according to committee records. The complaints are handled by the Mon State Complaint and Appeal Letter Review and Assessment Committee.
The committee, which was formed in March 2016 had received over 900 complaints through the first week of July, not including another 400 letters sent directly to the speaker of the Hluttaw Daw Tin Ei.
“The largest number of complaints concerned land disputes, followed by complaints about village headmen and the court system. In many cases we don’t have the authority to solve these problems but we record them and resolve about 70% by working with the relevant department,” said U Aung Kyaw Thu, the committee’s chairman.
The vice speaker of the Mon State Hluttaw, U Aung Naing Oo, said, “The most common complaint letters are about land. When we receive the letters we notify the relevant department to have them address it.” The committee usually investigates complaints in the field before working with the state government to resolve problems where that is possible.
In the five years of the last Hluttaw between 2010 and 2015, it received 1661 letters, of which 370 were resolved, according to state Hluttaw records.
