Mon State MPs and gov’t yet to meet

Dates have not yet been set to kick off a series of monthly meetings agreed to by Mon State Hluttaw members and state government officials, according to Dr. Aung Naing Oo, deputy speaker of the state’s Hluttaw.

The agreement to meet regularly was reached between the Mon State Chief Minister, state members of parliament (MPs), and government authorities to create a forum for exchanging information and answering questions, and to informally discuss state projects, said Deputy Speaker Dr. Aung Naing Oo.

“It was arranged that the first meeting would be held on July 18. But due to many challenges the meeting did not take place. Since then a new date for the meeting has not been decided. We will decide after I meet with the Chief Minister. The date must be convenient for everyone,” said the deputy speaker.

U Min Htin Aung Han, Minister for Electricity and Industry in Mon State, said that state projects would be implemented more smoothly with open communication between sides.

“It would be good if we could consult with each other. This is not my individual view but the perspective of the majority. Then it would be easier to move forward with activities.”

During the previous government’s term, meetings between MPs and government officials were not part of the regular schedule, but representatives would meet occasionally, according to Hluttaw representatives.

“Government officials focus on their work, and on the Hluttaw side the members focus on their work. If we only discuss what we’re doing at the Hluttaw conference, this could cause misunderstandings with each other. In order to avoid that, we should meet often,” said the deputy speaker.
