Over half of the eligible voters in Mudon and Kyaikmayaw townships in Mon State, did not vote in the 8 November 2015 elections, according to their respective township election sub-commissions.
In Mudon Township, of the 165,376 eligible voters, only 76,836 voted, according to Mudon Township Election Sub-commission.
An official from Mudon Township Election Sub-commission said: “Here, we have more than 160,000 legitimate, eligible voters. But only 76,000 voters came to vote. Before this, there were over 300 advanced voters.”
In Mudon Township, there are 42 village tracts. During the elections, about 102 polling stations were open. Candidates that contested in the township came from the National League for Democracy (NLD), the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), the Mon National Party (MNP), the All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMDP), the National Unity Party (NUP), and the National Democratic Force (NDF).
In Mudon Township, U Saw Htun of the NLD won the Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) seat, U Wai Tin of the NLD won the Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) seat, Daw Mya Tin Gee Maw of the NLD won the State Hluttaw (Parliament) seat (1) and Dr. Min Kyi Win of the MNP won the State Hluttaw seat (2).
In Kyaikmayaw Township there were 150,000 eligible voters but only 60,000 people voted according to the Kyaikmayaw Township Election Sub-Commission.
U Thant Htun Aung, of Kyaikmayaw Township Election Sub-commission said: “Just 60,000 voters voted, but the list of voters stated that there are over 150,000 [eligible] voters. By percentage, it was 43 percent, 57 percent of voters did not vote.”
In Kyaikmayaw Township, there were 99 polling stations, and the parties that competed there were the NLD, the USDP, the MNP, the AMDP, the 88 Generation Student Youths Party (88GSY), the Women’s Party (Mon), the Phalon-Sawaw Democratic Party, the National Unity Party (NUP) and some independent candidates.
U Saw Kyaw Win Maung of the NLD won the Pyithu Hluttaw seat, U Khin Zaw Oo of the NLD won the Amyotha Hluttaw seat, Daw Khin Myo Myint of the NLD won the State Hluttaw (1) seat and U Min Aung Mon of the USDP won the State Hluttaw (2) seat.
Only 51.3% of voters across Mon State voted and the NLD won with a landslide. Three MNP representatives, one AMDP representative and one USDP representative were also elected.
