Mon Federal Council Urges Decisive Action Against Junta Over War Crimes

The Mon State Federal Council (MSFC) has urged European leaders to assist in addressing the coup regime’s perpetration of war crimes in Myanmar, by facilitating international judicial bodies to take decisive action.

On March 16, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Myanmar citizens residing in the country staged a protest against the Junta's imposition of conscription laws.

The message sent by MSFC to the protest rally called upon the leaders of the European Union (EU) on behalf of various ethnic groups to address 3  key points:

1)    Action against the Junta to hold them accountable in international courts.

2)    A ban on the importation of jet fuel and weapons

3)    Requesting humanitarian assistance for the people of Myanmar.

MSFC has emphasized the absence of any effective measures concerning the genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity perpetrated by the junta against the people of Myanmar.

Although extensive evidence of war crimes has been amassed by a human rights bodies and the UN Human Rights Council, their recommendations to the ICC- (International Criminal Court) has failed to take any action to launch a formal investigation into the case of Myanmar post-coup.

The ICC’s inaction over Myanmar has drawn strong criticism from UN Human Rights rapporteur for Myanmar Tom Andrews.

With very little public support, the Junta faces significant challenges in quelling resistance forces through military and political means, which results in targeted the civilian population  and characterized by brutality and barbarity, the MSFC pointed out.

MSFC also highlighted that the people of Myanmar are enduring daily loss of lives and properties as a result of the Junta's arbitrary shelling, airstrikes, and landmines.

Nai Ayar Man, Deputy Director of External Relations of MSFC's administrative committee, was among the officials who attended the protest in Amsterdam.
