The Union Election Commission chairperson U Tin Aye said in a meeting between the UEC and 10 political parties at the UEC office in Nay Pyi Taw on 13 October that the UEC wants to postpone the elections due to floods in the country and landslides in Chin and Kayah States.
The USDP, the National Development Party and Myanmar Farmers’ Development Party supported U Tin Aye's proposal, according to U Win Htein, NLD Central Committee member, who said that he objected to the proposal. But the National Unity Party said it is up to the UEC to make the decision.
The National Unity Party, Arakan National Party, National Development Party, Myanmar Farmers’ Development Party, NLD, the ruling USDP, Kayin People's Party, Shan Nationalities League for Democracy, National Democratic Force and Shan Nationalities Democratic Party attended the meeting.
According to U Win Htein, the UEC said it was a general discussion meeting but it focused on the proposal to postpone the elections. The parties that were summoned to the meeting are major parties that will contest the elections in many constituencies. The parties are also members of the electoral affairs negotiation central committee.
