An anti-regime group has called on parents to send their children to schools run by teachers who have joined the protest movement, rather than junta-run educational institutions in Mindat, southern Chin State.

“We will take action against teachers and other education employees who do not join the civil disobedience movement after the people’s revolution is over, because these people are helping the military regime,” said the Mindat People’s Administration in its recent statement.

The group would like the children to attend classes in the “people’s schools” controlled by its interim education board in the villages.

”There is no security guarantee for government-run schools in Mindat town. Therefore, we would like to request parents not to send their children to these schools.”

The regime-appointed State Administration Council announced that all state schools will begin enrolling students on 26 May and classes will start on 2 June.

According to a Mindat man, the Burma Army have been driving through the town asking parents to send their children to junta schools. ”I think three schools will be opened this year. Only a few parents have enrolled their children in school,” said the man, who asked that his name not be published.
