Meeting Between NLD and MUP Cancelled

A meeting between a National League for Democracy (NLD) secretariat team and Mon Unity Party (MUP) didn’t proceed after a disagreement arose over the location of the venue. While the NLD wanted to meet at its central executive committee (CEC) office in Mon State’s capital, Mawlamyine, MUP preferred another venue.

After the NLD ignored MUP’s request to change the location the January 4 meeting was cancelled, Nai Layae Tama, MUP’s joint secretary-1, told NMG. Although welcoming NLD's offer to meet for discussions, he said there needs to be “mutual respect and understanding”, explaining that a request to change the location was made three times.

Dr Aung Moe Nyo, who’s leading the three-person secretariat team, told NMG that the meeting’s location was arranged by NLD headquarters. “MUP told us they couldn’t meet us at the CEC office in Mawlamyine and wanted to meet us at another venue. But we decided to receive them at our office.” He said they waited for one hour for representatives from the Mon political party who didn’t show up.

After winning the election, the NLD sent an open letter to 48 ethnic parties requesting their cooperation in building a united government, while emphasizing their shared goals and objectives. In the letter, the NLD promised to listen and respond to the needs of the ethnic nationalities. A three-person team was formed to meet with winning ethnic parties. The other two members of NLD’s panel are Nan Khin Htwe Myint and N'htong Kham Naw Sam.

On January 1, they met with three Kachin parties for the first time.

In Mon State, the NLD won 34 seats, while MUP secured the other 11 seats, No other party won seats in the election.
