Mawlamyine Doctor arrested for allegedly buying NUG Treasury Bonds

A night duty doctor from Mawlamyine was arrested for buying NUG treasury bonds.

Dr. Chan Myae Aung was arrested at the Ngwe Moe Hospital on December 5 at 11 pm by more than 20 police and soldiers.  According to a local source, it is believed his arrest may have been related to a purchase of NUG Treasury Bonds. In May of this year, the military junta declared the NUG, a shadow government established in the wake of the military coup to be an illegal and terrorist entity.

A source close to Dr Chan Myae Aung, said, “now, he is fine. He is at the township police station. He has not been released yet because they are still questioning him.”

Dr. Chan Myae Aung has served as an unpaid doctor at the Zivita Dana Free Clinic opened by the Thar Tana Nwe Foundation however, the clinic is temporarily closed due to lack of doctors.

“The clinic will be reopened as soon as he is released,” said Ashin Sanda Zawti of the Thar Tana Nwe Foundation.

Dr. Chan Myae Aung is a military doctor who resigned from the army about three years ago and has been providing medical services to  people around the village during Covid.
