Labour leaders face possible arrest by Myanmar junta

After the Myanmar military coup, labour union leaders and workers involved in mass protests and labour strikes have been targeted by the State Administration Council.

Labour leaders are avoiding going to their offices and are avoiding the security forces.

"From now on, we cannot go even in the vicinity of the labour office. They are pursing us. The situation of the workers is very bad," a labour leader told Mizzima.

The woman in charge of the Confederation of Trade Unions has been pursued since 5 February, and security forces came to her parents’ home to arrest them in April.

According to a labour leader, FGWM Hlaing Thar Yar BOC office was searched on the night of 5 February and the house was searched on the night of 6 February. Chiefly, they came to arrest the person in charge.

Thet Hnin Aung posted on his social media as follows: the Military Council raided on the house owned by Thet Hnin Aung, general secretary of the Confederation of Trade Unions, and took away organization property on June 14 and the headquarters in South Dagon Township was sealed on June 15,

A labor leader said that it is not easy to know the exact number of arrested labour leaders and workers. Employees are reportedly facing more oppression than before in the workplace.
