Kyauktaw’s two detained villagers released

Two out of four people from Kyauktaw Township’s two villages, who have been detained under the Unlawful Associations’ Law were released today (March 12) since they were cleared of accusations.

U Than Tun and U Aye Kyaw Than from Maha Muni village and U Kyaw Kyaw Nyunt and U Maung Chan Aye from Thayet Ta Bin village were arrested on February 28 and Kyauktaw police has opened a case under section 7 (1) and (2) of the Unlawful Associations’ Law.

But, U Kyaw Kyaw Nyunt and U Than Tun have been released since it was discovered that they did not breach any law after the CID checked their mobile phones, U Kyaw Kyaw Nyunt said.

U Aye Kyaw Than and U Maung Chan Aye were remanded in custody, but it’s not certain if they will be put on trial, said U Saw Maung Thein, administrator of Thayet Ta Bin village.

The DMG tried calling several times for comment but was unable to reach the Kyauktaw police station.

Another five detained people _ four village administrators and one villager from Mrauk-U Township_who have been arrested for questioning on the same day as the two men, were released on March 8 because of the lack of sufficient evidence.
