KSPP, Youth to Collaborate for 2020 Election

The Kachin State People's Party (KSPP) announced it will form an “election victory team” with youth to campaign for Burma’s coming 2020 general election.

According to party chair Dr. Manam Tu Ja, the party will hold discussions with young people about how to win the vote.

"We have to create unity with youth who have experience and new ideas. We need to take their strength and use it in the right place,” Dr. Manam Tu Ja told NMG, adding that youth were an integral part of the election campaign. “We won't leave them behind. We will discuss with them for our future plan,” he said.

According to KSPP policy, the party welcomes more representation from youth and women in parliament.

"We are systematically working for it. As far as I know, the party will select five youth and five women as election candidates,” Seng Nu Pan, the general secretary of the KSPP’s youth committee, told NMG. “Whether it is the state or the people's parliament, we will try.”

The Union Election Commission has announced the 2020 general election will be held in November.

“Our youth will work as campaign managers. Our youth will help electoral candidates. Our youth will lead to form an election victory team. Our youth will give voter education trainings. We expect that at least 1,000 youth will participate,” Seng Nu Pan said.

Mongra Awng, who is working with the Kachin Youth Movement, said that more than 1,000 Kachin youth will work together on the electoral campaign so that the KSPP could stand a better chance of winning the majority of seats in Kachin State.

"We will work together with the KSPP's youth. The voice of Kachin youth will be present in parliament. Kachin youth must get some seats in parliament. These days, youth are united. Therefore, our youth will get victory,” Mongra Awng told NMG.

KSPP formed as a merger of other Kachin political parties. The Kachin Democratic Party, the Kachin State Democracy Party and the Unity and Democracy Party – Kachin State merged and formed the KSPP in 2018.

Some members of the United Nationalities Federal Democracy Party, the Kachin State Progressive Party and the Kachin National Congress have also joined the KSPP.
