KNU releases statement on leaking of letter to NRPC

The Karen National Union (KNU) said the authorities are responsible for keeping confidential information secure after its letter, which was addressed to the National Reconciliation and Peace Center (NRC)’s chair Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, was leaked online, according to its statement which was released on the KNU Headquarters Facebook page on October 29.

In the statement, the KNU stated that the official letter was sent to inform the main stakeholders of the peace process but it was circulated on social media within a short time so the KNU believes relevant parties should have keep confidential information secure.

In the letter dated October 2 and signed by the KNU chair Gen Mutu Say Poe, the KNU stated that sufficient time is needed for all the members of the organization to participate in unity in order to make its implementation of the peace process meaningful so it would respectfully like to inform the government that it will temporarily refrain from participating in any current activities.

In the statement, the KNU explained that it will discuss, endorse, and negotiate internally on the agreements that were reached between the government and ethnic armed organizations during the private meeting held in Naypyidaw on October 15-16 and all the members of the organization have yet to understand and endorse the new mechanism, framework and decision-making process of the peace process.
