A Rohingya refugee from Kutupalong Refugee Camp in Ukhiya, Bangladesh died on 2 December at after being hit by an auto-rickshaw on 30 November, according to Islam, a refugee at Kutuaplong Camp

Islam said the accident happened on 30 November on the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Highway and that the victim was taken to Chittagong Medical College where he died from his injuries two days later.

 “The victim was identified as Nurul Hakim (25), son of Nurul Alam. [A refugee] from Kutupalong official refugee camp who had the Master Registration Card (MRC) number 52401 and lived in Shed 42 in Block B.”

Khalu, a refugee who witnessed the incident said that on 30 November at about 10:00am Hakim left the camp and went to the highway. There he met a local youth Nurul Kobir, (also known as Botto) who snatched his mobile phone from him.

As Nurul Kobir snatched the phone he pushed Nurul Hakim into the road where he was hit by a fast travelling auto rickshaw.

Khalu also added that Nurul Kobir has a bad reputation in the area.

According to Anwar, one of Nurul Hakim’s relatives, after the accident other refugees took him to a clinic in the refugee camp, but due to the critical nature of his injuries the doctors at the camp clinic referred him to the to Cox’s Bazar Government Hospital. The doctors there then referred Nurul Hakim to Chittagong Medical College Hospital so he could receive better treatment.

Unfortunately, according to his father, he later died in Chittagong Medical College Hospital on 2 December whilst being treated for his injuries.

According to an elderly refugee Nurul Hakim’s relatives submitted a complaint about the incident and Nurul Kobir to the UNHCR and the head of the Kutupalong Refugee Camp. They also filed a case against the auto rickshaw driver and Nurul Kobir with the police at Ukhiya police station
