Junta’s Shelling Kills 13 Civilians in Mon State in 1 Month

In May, 13 civilians were killed by the Junta's indiscriminate artillery shelling in Mon State, according to the Mon State Human Rights report published in La Goon Eain paper.

Among the dead were five children, while 41 civilians were injured. Shelling destroyed over 50 houses in Mon State, with Thaton Township being the hardest hit.

This year, Mon State has seen a significant uptick in human rights violations, with arbitrary shelling of civilian areas being a major contributing factor.

Min Than Lwin, an official of the New Rehmonnya Federated Force (NRFF), which published the La Goon Eain paper, emphasized that the constant threat of artillery shelling significantly impacts the daily lives of the Mon people.

"Even while doing normal daily activities, an artillery shell can fall directly above you. Living in your own house and yard does not mean you are safe from this threat. As a result, people in both the south and north of Mon State are constantly worried about the danger of shelling. Even at night, they cannot sleep peacefully due to the anxiety and stress”, he said.

People in Thaton, Bilin, Kyaikto, and Kyaikmaraw townships, currently experiencing heightened military tensions, and in Ye township, under martial law, frequently bear the brunt of the threat of the Junta’s indiscriminate artillery strikes.

The shelling of residential areas represents a clear escalation in serious human rights abuses by the coup regime, with profound and devastating impacts on local communities.

During the 2 months of March and April, Junta troops randomly fired artillery more than 70 times into villages and public routes, destroying more than 460 houses, according to La Goon Eain paper.
