Junta leader plans to move Mawlamyine airport

The coup leader, Sr. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing said plans are underway to relocate the Mawlamyine airport to a new place in Mon State.

The airport must be relocated because the current Mawlamyine airport is close to the city and the university, and there are limitations to increasing flight trips and extending the runway, the junta leader said.

During his visit to Mawlamyine on December 20, the military leader stated that plans are under way to build a modern airport for all types of planes to land and take off for the development of Kayin and Mon states.

However, the military leader did not disclose where the new Mawlamyine Airport will be located or when it will be implemented.

The international-class airport will be constructed close to Kawparam village in Mudon Township while the international port will be constructed between Balok Nyaung Wyne and Wakali village, which is close to the sea outlet.

U Aung Kyi Thein, spokesman for the Mon State’s military council, in recent days confirmed to Than Lwin Times that the land compensation for this project will be paid within three months.

The Central Committee for Project Implementation, comprised of Union Ministers of the MilitaryCouncil, was formed on December 10, last year, for the new international-class airport and international port project.

The Mon State Hluttaw Representative Commission declared on July 11 that the military council’s plan was just a dictatorial effort for a handful of people and that it was unlawful to take, sell, or transfer any of their land because it was not an official government.
