Junta files fresh charge against daughter of ousted Arakan State chief minister

The Myanmar junta has brought another case against Ma Moe San Suu Kyi, the daughter of ousted Arakan State Chief Minister U Nyi Pu, according to family members.

She was charged this week under Section 17(1) of the Unlawful Associations Act during a court hearing inside Insein Prison, where she has been held since May of last year and is on trial for alleged incitement, said family member Ma Kyi Kyi Oo.

“We don’t know exactly who has filed the complaint. The next trial is scheduled for March 15. I am sad and don’t want to talk much about it,” said Ma Kyi Kyi Oo.

Ma Moe San Suu Kyi, who is a member of the National League for Democracy (NLD)’s central committee for youth affairs, was detained at her apartment in Yangon on May 8 along with Arakan State NLD Vice Chairman U Soe Lay and two other party members.

She was then charged for incitement under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, and is being held in Yangon’s Insein Prison.

At least 10 court hearings have been held on the incitement case since her detention, and family members do not know details about the hearings, said Ma Kyi Kyi Oo.

If convicted under Section 17(1) of the Unlawful Associations Act, she faces up to three years in prison and a fine.

Her father U Nyi Pu was sentenced to nine years in prison for alleged corruption, and and two years for incitement. He also faces another charge for alleged violation of electoral laws in the 2020 general election.
