The Home Ministry sent armed forces to the office of a prominent Shan political party in Burma’s commercial capital to question its members if they maintain links with so-called unlawful associations.

Special Investigation Department, Police Intelligence Department, General Administration Department and police officers arrived at Shan Nationalities League for Democracy’s (SNLD) office in Yangon at mid-day on June 10.

“Sa Ya Pa (Office of Chief of Military Security Affairs) asked us whether our MPs and members have connections with Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, National Unity Government and People’s Defense Force,” Sai Lek, SNLD general secretary, told SHAN.

People’s Party, New National Democracy Party, National Democratic Force Party and Democratic Party (Myanmar) all received similar visits at their offices in Yangon from armed forces sent by Home Ministry.

In southern Shan State, gunmen assassinated a National League for Democracy (NLD) politician.

Unidentified assailants fired four bullets at Htut Maung, 65, at his rice mill in Mauksan village, Taunggyi Township at 2 pm on June 12.

The gunmen took his body, a resident told SHAN. “Nobody dared to go see what had happened after hearing the gunfire.”

Htut Maung’s body hasn’t been returned to his family members. They inquired about it at the hospital and police station but couldn’t attain information regarding its whereabouts.

Assassinations of politicians opposed to the military council have increased in recent last months. Mi Wai Thi Phyo from Mon Unity Party was murdered by multiple assailants in Karen State on June 8.
