A grade-7 schoolgirl killed by the Military Council’s shelling in Rakhine

A grade-7 schoolgirl from Pyeintaw Village in Rathedaung Township in Rakhine State was killed by an artillery shell fired by the Tatmadaw troops without any fighting going on in the area.

On the morning of October 19, troops from the Yesoemyaung Military Camp, based in the northern part of Rathedaung Township, fired 4 rounds of artillery. The third shell directly hit the home of 13-year-old schoolgirl Ma Nyein Aye Zan and killed her.

A local villager described what happened “The artillery round fell into the house and exploded. The girl was blown out of the house and onto the street with explosive speed. She had a gaping wound on her back. The lower part of her waist was almost severed”.

U Aung Kyaw Min, the father said, "I can't even find the words to say. I am devastated."; The schoolgirl was alone at the time. The villagers said that the Military Camp fired four artillery rounds in the morning even though there was no fighting near Pyeintaw Village. The other 3 rounds fell outside areas of the village and no one else was hurt.
