Grade 10 student killed, three injured in car accident involving a monk

A grade 10 student was killed and three others were injured when a car driven by a monk was hit by a motorcycle at the top of Kyar Inn Irrigation Road in Mawlamyine, Mon State on January 9.   Details of the accident were shared by the Ramayana Emergency Relief Association.

Three monks from Mudon Township were arrested by the local  police following the  accident.

“The car  crossed onto the side of  the road where the  motorcycle was. The accident appeared to have been caused by driver error” reported an individual who witnessed the event.

A girl who died on the spot, and the injured were all taken to Mawlamyine Township People’s Hospital, by ambulance.

In early December 2021 another accident took place that also  involved a monk who was driving a vehicle that killed a 12-year-old student from Thanbyuzayat Township.

Local community members have been critical of monks driving recklessly and causing vehicular accidents.
