In a joint effort by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Ethnic Affairs, ethnic language teachers have been appointed as daily-wage staff in the government schools in the Mon State.
Among 1,118 ethnic language teachers from the government schools in the Mon State, 463 qualified teachers have been appointed in the 2017-2018 academic year, according to the Mon State’s Kayin Affairs Minister U Aung Myint Khine.
“The salaries will be given [to the teachers] on the day of their official appointment. Only the list of appointed teachers who have passed the exam has been released so far,” he said.
The Ministry of Education has decided Ks 70,000 per month for every appointed teacher. The hired teachers are required to teach full time similar to other government-appointed teachers, the minister added.
“As said by the Union Minister of Ethnic Affairs, the ethnic language teachers who have not been appointed as daily-wage teachers will continue teaching part time and receive a monthly stipend of Ks 30,000 like before,” said Nai Mon Yarzar, member of the Mon State Hluttaw’s Ethnic Affairs Committee.
There are 568 Mon literature teachers, 371 S’gaw Kayin literature teachers, 113 Eastern Pwo Kayin literature teachers, 66 Pa-O literature teachers in the government schools in the Mon State.
A total of 23,050 Mon students, 12,460 S’gaw Kayin students, 4,773 Eastern Pwo Kayin students, and 2,156 students are attending the government schools in the Mon State.
