Emergency meeting of Yangon Region Parliament to be held on June 18

Yangon Region Hluttaw (Parliament) Speaker Tin Maung Tun announced that an emergency meeting of the regional parliament will be held on June 18.

Seikkan Township MP San Kyaw said that a resolution to impeach Yangon Region Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein is likely to be discussed in the emergency meeting of the regional parliament.

A total of 32 regional legislators, including USDP (Union Solidarity and Development Party) MPs and military MPs, signed the resolution to impeach the Chief Minister for holding a religious ceremony in violation of the ban on mass gatherings during the COVID-19 crisis, and a budget issue.

The Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein and top regional officials attended a religious ceremony at the Botahtaung Pagoda in Yangon on May 24 despite the ban on mass gatherings.
