Don’t point finger at military dictatorship while practicing autocracy – Dr Aye Maung

Dr Aye Maung said one should not point his or her finger at the military dictatorship while one practices dictatorship after taking power.

“People have been pointing out dictatorship. However, what happened in Germany before the World War II? What happened to Adolf Hitler after he won the election? That’s why [one shouldn’t practice] dictatorship. Rather than pointing the finger at military dictatorship, one shouldn’t personally practice dictatorship,” Dr Aye Maung told reporters when he was taken to court on July 9.

Dr Aye Maung is facing three charges and he attended his 16th court hearing at the Sittwe District Court in the Rakhine State on July 9.

He did not reveal who he was referring to when he was talking about a person who blames dictatorship but is practicing dictatorship after taking power.

He also expressed his wish for the third session of the Panglong Conference to invite Shan leader U Khun Htun Oo and allow him to give a meaningful speech.

He commented that peace will only be obtained after building friendship among all ethnic people and the former U Thein Sein administration’s decision to pull out from the implementation of Myitsone dam project and the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP)’s decision not to run in ethnic areas in the upcoming by-election show signs of good prospect for the federal union.

He urged the National League for Democracy (NLD) administration to take caution in handling ethnic affairs.

“The person who is standing with the public should take a lesson from what happened in Chaungzon. Blood has been spilled on Rakhine Mrauk-U issue after Chaungzon. It shouldn’t have been spilled. It damaged the image. Now, there’s the Karenni issue. We feel very sad over it,” said Dr Aye Maung.

He urged the NLD government to drop all charges against Karenni youths who have been charged for protesting against erecting of Bogyoke Aung San statue, and release them to welcome the third session of the 21st Century Panglong. He also urged the government to release Rakhine youths who have been arrested over Mrauk-U incident.

Among the persecutor’s witnesses, Police Corporal Hla Yin from Rathedaung Police Station, who is the third witness, was examined in court on 9 July and the next court hearing has been scheduled for July 16.
