An RPG landed in a nearby village, causing locals to worry for their safety.
Recent fighting between the Tatmadaw and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) in northern Shan State’s Mansan Township has concerned local people, particularly since an unexploded shell landed in a local community on Friday.
The clashes occurred near Nawng Pan village from July 11-12.
“We are so lucky because the shell didn’t explode. If it had exploded, I can not imagine how many people would have been killed,” a Mansan local told SHAN, referring to the rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) that landed in Nawng Pan at 3:30 p.m. on July 12.
Villagers said that they did not know which armed group had fired the weapon.
“We are afraid of clashes continuing in our area. The clashes halted for a short time. We are so worried about our safety,” the local said.
The chairperson of the Namtu IDP camp, Ba Nyan, confirmed to SHAN that the clashes in nearby Mansan had taken place, but that no villagers had been injured.
The fighting occurred despite the Burma Army declaring a two-month extension of its unilateral ceasefire in five military command regions, including Shan State, on June 30. The ceasefire was originally initiated in December 2018, and has since been extended twice.
Clashes with the TNLA have been reported throughout the unilateral ceasefire.
