Dengue fever outbreak in Mon State

Health experts have warned of rise in dengue fever cases in Mon State and urged the public to remain vigilant and seek urgent medical help if they think they have the disease.

Dengue fever can occur throughout the year, but it spreads more rapidly at this time of year, the beginning of the rainy season. In the first 10 days of June 2025 an average of 65 new dengue cases were reported every day in Mon State.

The number of dengue fever cases in Mon State since early May until 10 June has already surpassed 1,000, according to the Mon State Health Administration Department.

Normally, the majority of dengue fever patients are children, but this year there have been a higher number of adult patients than usual, according to a Mon State doctor.

He said to Than Lwin Times: “Dengue fever used to mainly affect children, but now we’re seeing it more often in adults. Patients usually have a persistent fever that doesn’t go down easily. When adults with high fever are tested because we are suspicious [it might be dengue fever], it often turns out they’ve actually contracted dengue fever.”

He warned that at this time of year, when the disease is rife, that both children and adults should seek medical attention at hospitals or clinics as soon as they develop a fever, as delaying or ignoring it could lead to more severe symptoms.

As dengue fever is spread by the Aedes mosquito, health experts have advised both children and adults to protect themselves from mosquito bites. Since the mosquitoes lay their eggs in water they also advised people to ensure there are tight lids on any  outdoor water containers outdoors to prevent the mosquitoes from breeding close to people.
