The State Counsellor reportedly emphasized the people’s role in assisting the government in its duties.

State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi traveled to Tachileik and Mong Yawng in eastern Shan State this week and held meetings with locals.

At the meeting in Tachileik, held at Aung Myat hall, people raised issues to the State Counsellor including the lack of doctors in the public hospital, transportation problems, land insecurity, and challenges facing youth.

According to Sai Oo, a local man who attended the meeting, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi emphasized the people’s role in assisting the government in its duties.

“It’s true that the government has a responsibility to provide good transportation. The ruling government must work for better transportation as much as it can. But people must participate in it. People have to maintain the road with discipline,” she reportedly said.

A priority is the construction of an all-seasons Tachileik-Monghsat road, which she said would start this year and continue into the 2019-2020 financial year, depending on budget. The project would begin in the areas where the road is in the worst condition and then expand to other areas.

The trip, which will include visits to Kengtung and Monghsat, as well as to Taunggyi for Shan National Day on Thursday, is reportedly for the State Counsellor to tell the public what her government has been doing, and to hear more about the people’s expectations.
