A judge, lawyer and three police officers from Chin State’s Mindat Township have been reported to Burma’s anti-corruption commission.
Referring them on November 5 were five civil society organizations (CSOs) and an alleged victim.
The case in question involved a motorbike accident near Mindat public hospital in 2017 involving two men: Hung Ling Ngai and Maung Thang Ki Hung. Both filed a court case, leading to Hung Ling Ngai being detained.
Mindat CSOs wrote a report accusing Judge Tun Tun Naing and lawyer Aung Soe Thein of extorting 200,000 kyats (US$125) each from Hung Ling Ngai while he was in custody. The report also alleges that police officers took 3,400,000 kyats ($2,120). Later Aung Soe Thein reportedly asked for an additional 2,500,000 kyats ($1,559).
“We realized the judge, advocate lawyer and police officers took corrupt money,” Salai Mang Hung, the coordinator of CSO Third Eye—one of the groups behind the report—told Khonumthung News.
Salai Mang Hung said he hopes the anti-corruption commission—headed by President U Win Myint—will thoroughly investigate the allegations.
“That’s why the anti-corruption commission was formed—because there are corruption cases. I hope serious action will taken against corrupt people once the President knows about this case,” he explained.
