The Chin State Chief Minister Salai Lian Luai officially opened India-Myanmar border checkpoint yesterday (August 8) morning.

Visitors can now officially cross the land border via No 2 Indian-Myanmar Border Trade Friendship Bridge.

In the past, visitors could only cross the land border with mutual understanding due to lack of border pass system, but now the land border has been officially opened to implement the agreement on land border crossing with Myanmar, which was signed between India and Myanmar.

The opening ceremony of the India-Myanmar border checkpoint was held at Zowkhawthar Village under Champhai District of Mizoram, India and the Chin State Chief Minister was welcomed by Mizoram Commerce and Industries Minister H Rohluna.

The opening ceremony of the India-Myanmar border checkpoint was held simultaneously at the two border checkpoints in Tamu and Rihkhawdar.

“There is no border pass system at the moment. Visitors are going in and out with understanding. Now, a card will be issued in the border pass system. The border pass (BP) will permit 17 days and 16 nights. The temporary border pass (TBP) will permit seven days and six nights. Foreign citizens can now officially visit [Myanmar] and e-visa will be available soon,” said U Lalpeklawma, head of the Rihkhawdar Information and Public Relations Department.

Mizoram’s daily newspaper The Aizawl Post reported that only visitors with passports and visas can cross the international border checkpoint via the Indian-Myanmar Friendship Bridge.
