Burma Army Launches Artillery Attack Near Laiza

Burma Army launched an artillery attack at several locations around Laiza, the headquarters of Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), after weeks of fighting in Kachin and northern Shan states.

A man told KNG even though shells landed far from the KIO's stronghold many civilians who live in the internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps are worried the next time they will strike Laiza.

Burma Army IB-142 based on Han Kai Bum (mountain) shelled KIO's military wing, Kachin Independence Army (KIA) Battalion 27, in Mansi Township, with a 105-mm howitzer. The same day, April 8, Burma Army attacked KIA's Tsin Yu Bum camp with an 81-mm launcher from Hkara Bum.

Burma Army also attacked KIA battalion 19 and 14 (Brigade-5) near Maisak Pa village.

KIA Battalion 11 ambushed a Burma Army convoy on the same day with landmines near Loi Li Yang village, in Mogaung Township.

"Soldiers came in three military vehicles from Mogaung...After passing Ma Yang Kahtaung village, they clashed with our KIA troops,” a Kachin soldier on the front line told NMG.

On April 7, KIA ambushed Burma Army at two locations in Kutkai Township, in northern Shan State.

A resident of Myitkyina helping IDPs said there are many civilians affected by the fighting in N'jan Yang Township and in Sein Lon area near Loije and Mai Ja Yang.
