Arrival of junta column forces Launglon residents to flee for their lives

Thousands of villagers fled after a junta column suddenly arrived in a village in Launglon Township, Tanintharyi Region, sparking armed clashes.

At around 5:00 a.m. on May 22, a junta column of approximately 150 personnel set out from Launglon Town and moved toward Nyinmaw Village in Launglon Township.

Shortly afterward, the column advanced from Nyinmaw Village to Satpye Village, where it exchanged fire with a local resistance coalition for about an hour.

During their advance toward Nyinmaw Village, the troops detained everyone they encountered along the route. About 30 of those detainees were later interrogated by soldiers at the Nyinmaw Village monastery.

However, when clashes broke out near Satpye Village, the soldiers stationed at the monastery released the detainees and departed to reinforce their comrades.

The column is currently stationed at the monastery and school in Satpye Village.

Due to the junta column's advance and the ensuing clashes, more than 2,000 villagers from Satpye, Nyinmaw, Yinboke, and Laythunkhan have fled to safety.
