Around 1,000 youths from Tai Youth Network engage in 8th mountain-climbing activity to mark Shan State National Day

Around 1,000 members of the Tai Youth Network (TYN) from the Shan and Kachin states and Yangon and Mandalay regions climbed a mountain, which is home to the historic Mwe Taw Holein Pagoda, as part of a drug eradication and environmental conservation activity to mark the 71st Shan State National Day.

The TYN members from 27 townships climbed the 1,090-feet high mountain in Pyet Kant Village Group of Mongping Township under Keng Tung District in the eastern Shan State on February 18.

“It (the mountain-climbing activity) was carried out to mark the 71st Shan State National Day. We received the benefits of climbing the mountain by learning about the environment and deforestation. We obtained the united strength of the Shan youths. We learned how to cooperate for nationalism. Local residents also took care of us,” said Sai Su, spokesperson of the TYN.

Besides participating in the mountain-climbing activity, the TYN members also attended a public talk on literature and language and nationalism.

“The mountain climbers attended the public talk held at Loi Tai Li in Karli Sub-Township on the 19th (February 19). During the public talk, Writer Khu Hin Kar Yang talked about nationalism and politics while Salay Kaw Mein talked about language and literature,” Sai Su added.

Loi Tai Li is located 149 miles east of Taunggyi in Kunhing Township and Mwe Taw Holein Pagoda can be reached after taking a one-hour boat trip from the Salween River ferry dock in the east of Karli.

This was the eighth time the TYN carried out the mountain-climbing activity to eradicate drugs, conserve the environment, and create unity among the youths.
