Explosives depot blast in TNLA-controlled Namhkam kills at least 55

At least 55 people were killed and many others injured when an explosives storage depot exploded in Namhkam Township, which the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) controls, in northern Shan State.

An explosives storage site used for mining and quarrying in Kawngtat Village, Namhkam Township, has exploded, according to the TNLA.

The explosion's force was so strong that it damaged nearby homes. Locals reported that women and children were among the casualties.

The TNLA said the explosion was merely an accident, with no evidence of foul play, and stated that it would take action against those responsible. Further investigations into the incident are reportedly underway.

According to town residents and local rescue teams, many houses near the blast site were completely destroyed, with 30 men and 25 women confirmed dead, and more than 70 injured people taken to hospital.

The incident has raised concerns among locals about storing weapons and explosives near residential areas.

Namhkam was among the townships the TNLA captured during ‘Operation 1027,’ when it joined forces with other ethnic armed organizations (EAOs) to launch attacks against the junta.

The TNLA expressed its condolences to the bereaved families and said it is coordinating relief and reconstruction efforts with relevant departments.
