The Arakan National Party (ANP) wants to lead the formation of the Arakan State government in order to serve the interest of people in Arakan State, said U Tun Aung Kyaw, a member of the policy affairs committee of the ANP.

“We want to lead the formation of the Arakan State government. If there is unity between the parliament and the government, we will not repeat past experience of discord and defiance.I have the strong political belief that we can implement with unity.”

U Tun Aung Kyaw continued “The ANP’s highest ambition is to form the Arakan State government if the NLD, which secured the majority of seats, provides the opportunities to join hands with the ANP. Our party has many people who can work for peace, stability and development, not only in Arakan State, but also in the whole country.”

By issuing the notification No-1/2016, the ANP requested the formation of Arakan State government after the 2015 General Elections. In 2012, the ANP carried out the charter amendment in the parliament, in cooperation with the NLD which called us “brothers”. But the NLD did not allow the ANP which secured the majority of seats, to form the government when it came to power. However if we are again not allowed to form the government, we will continue to act as the opposition party for the dignity of our people and the party.

The Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) which won the 2010 General Elections welcomed the ANP. The ANP held talks with the USDP in Nay Pyi Taw. But many points were never implemented.

In the 2020 General Elections, the ANP The ANP won the majority seats in the election securing 15 seats in Arakan State—four for the lower house parliament, four for the upper house parliament and seven for Arakan State parliament.

The UEC canceled the elections entirely in nine townships, namely Pauktaw, Ponnagyun, Yathaedaung, Buthedaung, Maungdaw, Kyauktaw, Minbya, Myaebon and MraukU.  The UEC also canceled the elections partly in four village-tracts in Sittwe, four wards and 49 village-tracts in Kyaukphu, three wards and 25 village-tracts in Ann Township and 10 wards and 52 village-tracts in Taunggup Township. The parties could compete only in few constituencies due to the cancellation of elections in Arakan State.
