Ann man walks free after acquittal in counter-terrorism law case

An Ann Township resident charged under Myanmar’s counter-terrorism law was acquitted by the Kyaukphyu District Court and released on February 4.

Lawyer for the defendant U Kyaw San Naing said his client U Maung Tin Yi, from Tattaung town in Arakan State’s Ann Township, was released because the prosecution had failed to present compelling evidence in support of a conviction.

“I am so happy to be released. But as a charity person, I feel sad for missing [the opportunity] to do social and national works while I was detained based on incorrect information,” said 47-year-old U Maung Tin Yi.

U Maung Tin Yi was detained by Ann Township police on July 3, allegedly for sending a threatening letter to Ann Township electrical engineer U Soe Hlaing. The defendant was formally charged under Myanmar’s counter-terrorism law in August last year.
