Amyotha Hluttaw decides to hold by-election in 2018

A by-election will be held within this year to fill in vacant seats in the states and regions.

The issue of holding the by-election was discussed during the Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) session held on January 15.

The Union Election Commission’s member U Aung Myint told the reporters that the date has not been set for the by-election.

He added that the commission will announce the date after the discussions are over.

Currently, the Shan State has one vacant seat in Laihka Township after the State Hluttaw MP U Sai Moon passed away last month.

The Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) won six out of eight seats in the by-election last April.
