Airstrike Kills Woman in Kawkareik Township, Karen State

A woman was killed in a junta airstrike that hit Kyeikdon Town in Kawkareik Township, Karen State at about 7:00 am on 22 January 2025.

The airstrike targeted the Fire Department office in Kyeikdon Town’s Ward 5. The woman who was killed lived in a nearby house. She was in her 50s, and worked on a rubber plantation.

A witness who lives in Kyeikdon Town said: “The bomb hit the office building directly, and shrapnel from the blast hit the woman who was warming herself by a campfire and killed her. The building was also badly damaged.”

There was no fighting in or around Kyeikdon Town at the time of the airstrike. No fighters from either the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) or joint resistance forces were stationed at the Fire Department office that was targeted by the airstrike.

The KNLA and a coalition of resistance forces captured and took control of Kyeikdon Town on 14 March 2024.

After losing control of the town the junta severed phone lines and internet access in the town, which has caused widespread communication blackouts in the town.

Previously on 14 January 2025, also in Kawkareik Township, a junta drone bombed Kamaingkone Village, killing one man and injuring another, according to the Central Executive Committee of the Karen National Union (KNU), the political wing of the KNLA.
