New Delhi (Mizzima) – The court overseeing the trial of Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Friday adjourned the hearing of testimony from a second defense witness, setting the date for the reconvening of proceedings for July 10.
 
Nyan Win, spokesperson for Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD), on Friday said because of the failure of Burma’s High Court’s to transfer the case file to the lower court, the testimony of defense witness Khin Moe Moe was postponed for a week.
 
“The court postponed the trial and set July 10 as the new date to hear testimony, as the original court [lower court] has not yet received the case file from the High Court.”
 
The latest delay in the trial of Aung San Suu Kyi comes as United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Burma on Friday for a two-day visit in order to address the country's political deadlock.
 
Ban is scheduled to fly from Rangoon to Naypyitaw, the new administrative capital of Burma, to meet Burmese military head-of-state Senior General Than Shwe. He will also meet with NLD members, though it is uncertain if Suu Kyi is to be included.
 
Aung San Suu Kyi is being charged for allegedly breaching her previous terms of house arrest after an uninvited guest, American John William Yettaw, swam to her lakeside house and remained in her compound for two nights.
 
If convicted, she could face a further period of detention of up to five years.
 
The High Court had heard arguments from Suu Kyi's legal team for the inclusion of an additional two defense witnesses. However, on Monday of this week, the court announced the appeal had been rejected.
