Four men convicted of murder and other crimes were executed by the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) on June 13 in Laukkai, the capital of the Kokang Self-Administered Zone in northern Shan State near the China border.
The MNDAA held a public judicial event at a sports field in Ton Chain Ward, Laukkai, where seven convicted offenders were presented. Of them, four were executed and three received lengthy prison sentences, according to the Kokang armed group.
According to the MNDAA, the four men executed had been convicted of separate crimes: one for killing his father, another for killing his mother, a third for killing two people in a dispute over debt, and a fourth for killing his eight-year-old daughter while under the influence of drugs.
The MNDAA said the public judicial event was intended to strengthen the rule of law and deter crime in areas under its control following Operation 1027, a major anti-junta offensive launched by the Three Brotherhood Alliance, which includes the MNDAA and two other ethnic armed organizations (EAOs).
The MNDAA executive committee stated that ‘anyone who violates the law will inevitably face severe punishment’.
Those sentenced to death were publicly displayed with their hands bound behind their backs. After their crimes were read out, they were taken to the execution site and executed by firing squad.
The European Union (EU) Office in Myanmar strongly condemned the MNDAA’s earlier public execution of 10 convicted criminals in Laukkai on April 24, 2024, stating that the death penalty is an inhumane punishment that violates human dignity.
In addition, the EU urged the MNDAA to uphold the rule of law in line with international standards in its pursuit of federal democracy.
The MNDAA has been implementing its own administrative and judicial system since seizing large areas in northern Shan State, including Laukkai, during Operation 1027.
At least six public executions have been carried out in MNDAA-controlled areas, along with lengthy prison sentences for crimes including murder, kidnapping, and arms smuggling.
The MNDAA reportedly executed seven people in Theinni (Hsenwi) Town and Lashio City in northern Shan State in September 2025, five in Lashio in April of the same year, one district officer and two privates in Laukkai in April 2024, and six more in December 2024.
