Poe War — Eight people have died and two others remain missing after a passenger ferry capsized in Ponnagyun Township, located in Myanmar's western Rakhine State, on Monday.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:15 p.m. on June 15, when the vessel was traveling from Ku Taung village in Rathedaung Township to Kyauktaw Township.
Local sources report that the boat struck a pillar of the U Yat Taw suspension bridge and sank rapidly into the stream.
"The boat hit the suspension bridge and went down," a local resident stated. "Because it is the rainy season, the river current was exceptionally strong. One man and one woman are still missing."
The vessel was reportedly transporting 35 passengers, most of whom were traveling to Kyauktaw for shopping.
Local rescue teams have confirmed that the deceased include three men and five women. Emergency responders pulled 25 survivors from the water, including three men who were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Search and rescue operations remain underway as authorities look for the two missing passengers.
